Q&A time with an Events Manager

What’s it like to move your wedding due to a global pandemic? Our Event Manager Emma talks about her first-hand experience.

Moving your wedding day is never something you want to have to contend with. There is so much excitement and anticipation about this special day that’s it’s hard not to feel disappointed that you’ll have to wait longer to say “I do” to the one you love the most! Unfortunately, with the current situation, there is quite simply nothing we can do to alter the fact that events for the foreseeable future will be cancelled if not heavily restricted!
No one wants to kill off their congregation, right?!
So I keeping telling myself to go with the flow, and that good things come to those that wait!

What did you do when you first realised you would have to postpone your wedding?

For me one of the first things I did was write out two lists – I’m a very list-oriented person. The first was an action plan – we were going to have to change our date and now I needed to figure out the things I need to do immediately such as tell my family and my best friends, who are Australian and who had booked their flights for this June. Get hold of my suppliers to let them know and see if they had availability for a new date. And finally, drink a large glass of gin when I had accomplished the above. The second was to write out a list of pros and cons!

Some of my pros were:

  • We are creating our wedding on Ollie’s family farm – we have landscaped from scratch the outdoor ceremony area and the reception garden. We are also currently restoring & decorating a 100-year-old barn. Having another year to get this right was not such a bad thing!
  • We now get a pre-wedding trial of what the gardens will look like in June
  • The payments coming out of your account in the final few months before a wedding are enormous if you have a short lead time – another year has helped us space these out a little more comfortably which is always a good thing!
  • I have another year to make (and sample) another batch of Rhubarb gin & Elderflower cordial for the reception drinks!

Some of the cons were:

  • The 6th June was supposed to be our wedding date, it is special to me in particular as when we originally set the date it was to create a much nicer memory for my 92 year old grandad, Charles, who took part in the D-Day landings 76 years ago to that day. My grandad passed away last September and although he was ill for some time, was so looking forward to travelling back to the UK for our wedding. It is a shame that the new wedding date will not fall on the same day – but not by much and I know that Grandad will be there in spirit to walk me down the aisle when it does happen!
  • The excitement! We were 3 months away from our wedding. The excitement of dress fittings, food tastings, invitations going out, table names/plans being made, discussing honeymoon ideas were all upon us! It felt a little like we’d had the rug pulled from out beneath us when we realised the gravitas of the Covid-19 pandemic and what it meant for our plans!

Looking back, I really believe that this last list helped me to get to the place I am in now. A real ‘always look on the bright side’ and ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ type state of mind. I’d really recommend to any brides out there to do the same – you don’t have to share your list with anyone it’s just cathartic for you!

So what’s next?

Well I plan to jolly well celebrate the 6th June this year with Ollie!

I read a fantastic article by The Wedding Planners the other day with tips on how to still celebrate your original date. And on their sound advice I’ll be sharing a bottle of fizz and a first dance on the 6th June 2020 with Ollie despite everything else.
