Why We Support Local Businesses

With the cost of living crisis, we're all feeling the pinch and cutting back where we can, but more than ever it's important to support business in our local communities.

With Wherstead Park being part of the East of England Co-op family, we make it our mission to support local businesses. From using local caterers, photographers, videographers, AV suppliers, marquee providers right through to small independent artisan businesses, where we invite them to showcase their products at our events.

We’re incredibly passionate about helping the local economy, and here’s our top 3 reasons  why…

Small businesses are the key ingredient for growth & sustainability

99.9% of the UK's business are small medium-sized, so their successes and failures have a huge impact on our overall economy.

They provide jobs

Without stating the obvious here,  shopping local contributes to bolstering local job opportunities. According to the FSB Total employment in SMEs was 16.3 million (61% of the total), whilst turnover was estimated at £2.3 trillion (52%), and employment in small businesses (with 0 to 49 employees) was 12.9 million (48% of the total), with a turnover of £1.6 trillion (36%).

They’re the Foundation of our communities

According to research conducted by Indie Retail,  for every £1 spent shopping online or at a large corporate, out of town retailers only generate around 5p back into the local community. However if you switch to spending the same amount locally, independent businesses would circulate 50p-70p back into that local economy!

In the spirit of supporting small local businesses, we’re excited to invite you to our free  Market in the Park on the 24th July & 14th August. We have a range of stalls selling some of the region’s finest crafts, artwork, food, drink, plants & fashion!
